Sentence Rhythm Guide
How sentence length variation creates engaging prose
Sentence length is the rhythm of writing. Like music, good prose alternates between short punchy notes and longer melodic phrases. A page of identically-lengthed sentences — even well-written ones — reads as monotonous. This tool makes your rhythm visible so you can edit by feel and by data.
The three sentence categories
Short (under 10 words): punchy, emphatic, easy to scan. Medium (10–20 words): the workhorse of clear writing — conveys one complete idea. Long (over 20 words): complex or compound; useful for nuance and elaboration. Aim for a mix of all three, with medium sentences dominating.
What the bar chart reveals
When you look at the bar chart and see a row of identical-length bars, your prose has no rhythm — it reads like a metronome. When you see jagged variation — short, long, short, long — your writing has dynamic range. Readers feel the difference even if they cannot articulate why.
Very long sentences (30+ words)
Sentences over 30 words are almost always improvable. They either contain a subordinate clause that should be its own sentence, or they list multiple items that should be a bulleted list. Reading comprehension drops measurably when sentences exceed 25–30 words.
The power of the single short sentence
One sentence. After a stretch of complex prose, a short sentence lands like a hammer. Copywriters call this the "pattern interrupt" — breaking the reader's expectation resets attention and gives emphasis to the short statement. Use it at maximum once per three paragraphs.
Average sentence length benchmarks
Hemingway averaged 11 words per sentence. Academic papers average 22-28. News articles average 15-20. Business email best practice is 14-18. Web content best practice is 15-20 words per sentence. If your average is above 25, you are writing for a specialist audience — make sure that is intentional.
Sentence length and SEO readability
Yoast SEO flags texts where over 25% of sentences are longer than 20 words. This maps directly to its "sentence length" readability check. Passing this check correlates with better "easy to read" signals to search algorithms. This tool shows you exactly which sentences are over 20 words.
Pro Tips
Long sentences (20+ words) show as the tallest bars. Those are your first editing targets. For each one, ask: can this be split into two sentences? Usually the answer is yes, and usually the split point is obvious when you look for it.
If you see 4–5 consecutive bars of similar height, that segment of your writing is monotonous. Insert one very short sentence in that run, or combine two short sentences into one longer one. Deliberate length variation is what separates good writing from great.
Your first and last sentences have outsized impact. If either is over 20 words, shorten it. First sentences should hook immediately — long openings bury the hook. Last sentences should land with weight — long closings dissipate that weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How does the tool split sentences?
- Sentences are split at . ! ? followed by whitespace or end of text. Abbreviations with periods (Mr., Dr., e.g.) can cause over-splitting — the tool treats each period-space as a potential sentence boundary. This is accurate for most web content where abbreviations are uncommon.
- What is the ideal sentence length for web content?
- Most readability research targets 15–20 words per sentence for general web audiences. Shorter (10–15) works well for mobile-first content. Longer (20–25) is acceptable for technical or specialist audiences. The most important factor is variation — avoid uniformity regardless of average length.
- Does sentence length directly affect Google rankings?
- Not directly. Indirectly: shorter sentences → higher readability scores → better dwell time and lower bounce rate → positive engagement signals. Google's Natural Language API also parses sentence structure, which may factor into entity and content quality assessment.
- Can I use this for languages other than English?
- The sentence splitter works on any language that uses . ! ? as sentence terminators. The Short/Medium/Long word thresholds were calibrated for English. Other languages with longer average word lengths (German, Finnish) will naturally score differently on the same word-count thresholds.
