Impressions
The number of times a URL appeared in Google Search results for a query, regardless of whether it was clicked.
Definition
Impressions in Google Search Console refer to the count of how many times any URL from your site appeared in Google Search results for a user's query. An impression is counted each time a URL is shown in the search results, regardless of whether the user saw or clicked it. Google Search Console counts impressions differently based on result type: a standard blue-link result registers an impression if the URL appears in the visible portion of the SERP without the user needing to scroll; Google Images registers impressions when thumbnails are visible.
Impressions are the starting point in the SEO funnel: Impressions → Clicks → Conversions. A page with many impressions but few clicks has a low CTR — indicating the title tag and meta description are not compelling enough for the search queries triggering those impressions. Conversely, a page with low impressions for a keyword you're targeting indicates the page is not yet ranking in the top 100 positions for that keyword.
In Search Console's Performance report, impressions are filtered by: query (which search terms triggered your URLs), page (which of your URLs appeared), country, device, and search appearance (web, images, video, featured snippets). Analyzing impression data by query is the most direct way to discover keyword opportunities — queries where you have impressions but low CTR and ranking below position 5 are prime optimization candidates.
